Perfect Haze

from When Did it Change? by Dawn Barrington

/

about

Perfect was re mixed and re mastered from my EP “Voices” and I did the vocals again because I felt they were too quiet at the beginning of the first recording. This song was inspired by the death of an old man who lived up my street. My son and I used to ride our bikes to school and we always saw him sat on his front porch every morning smiling and waving to at all the passers by. He brought a huge amount of joy to all those that passed him. Then one day he was gone and it had quite an impact on me, but it also gave me an opportunity to reflect on life and the legacies that we leave behind when we are gone. It turned out his name was Mr Berridge and his wife had died only 12 months earlier and he was just biding his time. He was an original Denmarkian which made him one of our elders.

lyrics

Verse 1
Everything has to end
No time for things to mend
That’s something I heard the old man say
Tired and broken, he’d had his day
Why does this world need to blame
The things in life that lay so lame
To the spills and frills of what was before
Even though there’s no sense in it all, no sense at all

Verse 2
The-old-man he knows-me more than I
He can tell me all my lies
But he doesn’t know the most precious of all
That is what day or hour I will fall
Cars drive by, the man walks past
He know’s it’s all going way to fast
But his road is ending, no need to fuss
It’s these new folks who are driving the bus, driving the bus

CHORUS
Day’s are nights, nights are day’s
We’re all going round in a perfect haze
Yes, days are nights, nights are days
We’re all going round in a perfect haze, perfect haze

Verse 3
Everything has to end
No time for things to mend
That’s something I heard the old man say
Tired and broken, he’d had his day, had his day
