about

This track is taken from the perspective of the cottages at Donnelly River holiday village. The lyrics take you through the journey they may have experienced from when they were built to the present day. They were built for the sole purpose to house the millars and then the village was shut down for a number of years before it re opened as a holiday town for tourists to stay and enjoy the peace and quiet of a lovely bush getaway.

lyrics

Old Milling Town (Donnelly River) by Dawn Barrington
Verse 1
Here I stand weary amongst my friends
Lamenting of days that have come to an end
The sound of the saw mills broke the silence each day
Kids going to school to learn, laugh and play, laugh and play

Verse 2
Trees were the livelihoods of the folks
Had no idea about the land they bestowed
How much harm and destruction they made
They spent each day chopping, to earn their pay, earn their pay

Chorus
The kids they played in the sun and the rain
Having fun, their world had no pain
They knew the most valuable thing around
Was right there already found
(rpt)
Verse 3
Then came the day when the mindset changed
The people learned of the mess they had made,
Abandoned alone, ghost town made of us
All that’s left are dreams in the dust, dreams in the dust

Verse 4
Now they come to h-e-a-r those words
That ghosts of the past whisper in their ears
Of the days gone by no one cared about this
Look what they’ve found, nature’s greatest gift
Nature’s greatest gift

Chorus x 2
